The Kano is a computer kit powered by Raspberry Pi and designed specifically for “the young and the young at heart” ages 6 and up! Kano offers a simple, fun way to” make and play with technology, and take control of the world around you.” Build your very own Kano computer in this workshop and then learn how to use Scratch, a programming language designed to teach coding to children. If you ever thought you might want to build a computer and learn how to code, but never thought you could, this workshop is for you. Having the resources to create your ideas visually is imperative in a Makerspace. Creating a 3-D model first creates an opportunity for initial troubleshooting and problem solving before taking a project to the next level. We will show you how you can use The Scribbler 3-D pen and the software SketchUp (Free for Ohio Schools from INFOhio) that can become a part of your Makerspace. Attendees will receive their own Scribbler 3D pen to take with them back to the classroom, and information on how they can get SketchUp free at their school from INFOhio.

They will give a tutorial of the tool and discuss ways to implement $martPath in your classroom. Originally developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab Scratch has stood the test of time as one of the best FREE online programming tools for students in grades 3-8. Scratch teaches block based programming which enables students to create a variety of media including interactive stories, art, simulations, games and more. Learn Scratch, and develop lessons for your class with this cross curricular innovative software. Scratch can also be used to create programs with Makey Makey.

Workshop will cover courses 1-3 and offer supplies needed to teach the courses. Why teach computer science in elementary school? Code.org has developed elementary school curriculum that allows even the youngest students to explore the limitless world of computing.
